4 Tips for Keeping Your Child's Teeth Healthy at the Holidays

The holidays always bring more sugary treats into our lives, our bellies, and our kid’s mouths! At Jungle Roots Children’s Dentistry, Dr. Culp is focused on educating you and your children to keep their teeth strong and their smiles bright. Here are four tips for keeping your child’s teeth healthy at the holidays:

  1. Help them select the non-chewy treats. Sticky substances can stick to tooth enamel, furthering the likelihood of decay. Really chewy candies can also pull out fillings, so help them select differently and if they do choose chewy, help them brush their teeth afterward.

  2. Don’t let kids crack nuts with their teeth. The hard exterior shell of the nut can cause serious tooth and gum damage, so be sure nuts are shelled before consuming! (Break out the nutcracker and put the kids to work!)

  3. Don’t allow kids to chew hard candy. Just as super sticky candies can harm teeth, hard candy can do damage as well. Chewing hard candy can crack or chip teeth, which is painful and requires a trip to the pediatric dentist! Be sure that your child allows any hard candy to dissolve naturally, or give them something different, like chocolate. Chocolate is softer, and doesn’t stick to the teeth - it brushes off easily!

  4. Maintain a proper brushing and flossing schedule. Last but not least, be sure that your child stays on schedule with brushing at least twice/day and flossing once/day in order to keep their teeth healthy and strong!
